Root Canal Treatment

The tooth consists of three layers namely – Enamel, Dentin & Pulp.
If the tooth decay/crack is limited to the first two layers, it can be corrected with Filling/ Restoration.
In case the tooth decay/crack reaches the third layer and causes inflammation or infection of pulp, an RCT or Endodontic Treatment is needed.

What is a ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?

Root Canal Treatment (RCT) or endodontic treatment is required when the pulp, which contains blood vessels and nerves, inside the tooth gets infected or inflamed. It is done on a damaged or infected tooth. Infection could be due to a cracked or broken tooth, deep decay (cavity), injury to the tooth or gum diseases. The procedure involves removing all the infected pulp, cleaning and shaping the system, and filling it. Root canal treatment helps in stopping the infection from spreading, saving your natural tooth from extraction, and relieving you from pain.

How do I know I need Root Canal Treatment?

  • Toothache. It can range from mild to severe. The pain can occur continuously or in intervals. The pain severely increases in the night or while lying down.
  • Lingering and prolonged sensitivity to hot, cold or both.
  • Discomfort on chewing or biting. Unable to chew on the affected side.
  • Swelling on the gum or the face of the affected side.

If the answer to any of the above is YES, you might need a root canal treatment.
Please call and get an appointment booked for evaluation.

What will happen at the appointment?

The procedure involves:

  • Digital X-rays are taken.
  • The tooth is numbed
  • An opening is made in the tooth through which the root canal system is cleaned and shaped
  • Removal of inflamed or infected tooth material
  • Cleaning and disinfection
  • Filling and sealing with an inert material.

It is a multi-step procedure and may require multiple sittings depending upon the severity of infection in the tooth being treated.
Can An Infected Tooth Heal Itself?
No, an infected tooth cannot heal itself. In fact, the infection can spread to other areas of your jaw causing serious pain. Treating an infected tooth requires medications or root canal treatment.
Does Root Canal Procedures Hurt A Lot?
No. Root canal treatment actually removes pain. With modern anesthesia techniques, root canal treatments have become very comfortable. Before proceeding with the root canal treatment, the dentist will use local anaesthesia to numb the infected area ensuring a painless treatment

How Long Does It Take To Heal?
Once the root canal treatment is completed, the treated tooth will heal within a few days. Patients might experience some pain once they effect of  anaesthesia goes away; this is likely to end within a few days.

Is there an alternative to RCT?

Removal of the tooth (extraction) is the only alternative to RCT. But it is always better if the tooth can be saved because removing a tooth can cause several problems like teeth shifting in position, bone loss, difficulty in eating, and aesthetic issues. Replacing a lost tooth with bridges or implants is a much more time and investment-intensive procedure than root canal therapy. Also no matter how effective modern tooth replacements are nothing can be as good as your natural tooth.

How long does RCT last?

Root canal treatment preserves the natural tooth for years and even decades - in most cases, even a lifetime. However,  proper hygiene and regular check-ups are recommended.

Can every tooth be saved by RCT?

Unfortunately, some teeth which are grossly decayed and have very little tooth structure remaining or have severe bone loss cannot be saved.

If the tooth is not hurting, why do I need a root canal treatment?

Patients sometimes experience tooth pain initially but it goes away on taking pain killers and antibiotics. But the tooth still remains infected. This infection keeps on causing bone loss. RCT helps to disinfect the tooth and stop the spread of infection. Many a times the chronic infection and need for root canal treatment are diagnosed through routine clinical examination and x-rays.

How much a Root Canal treatment costs in Jalandhar?

The price of a root canal depends on the location and health of the affected tooth. If the infection in your tooth is not treated, it might spread to adjacent teeth, gums, or even travel to other parts of your body, which will further become more expensive in the future.
