Detergent Foods - The Natural Teeth Cleansers

Detergent Foods - The Natural Teeth Cleansers

Did you know that there are certain foods you can eat which help to clean your teeth? We call them "Detergent Foods."
Detergent foods are certain foods that are beneficial for the teeth. Those food's crunchy texture, clean the teeth and remove debris. This fibrous material, once chewed, works as a kind of light scrub on the teeth, and also as a signal for the body to boost saliva production. Detergent foods can thus play a useful role in in preventing tooth decay by removing stuck particulate matter from the teeth, by diluting and washing away acids, and by being less damaging to teeth.
In addition, detergent foods will often have either a slightly sour taste or be particularly dry, which helps to stimulate the production of saliva even more.

What Are Some Examples of ‘Detergent Foods’?

A healthy diet is important for oral health as well as overall health, here are some examples of detergent foods:

  • Carrots
  • Apples
  • Celery sticks
  • Popcorn
  • Cucumbers
  • Pears
  • Lettuce
  • Cheese

The  detergent foods are usually firm and crisp and act like scrubbers on and around your teeth and gums and bring your mouth's pH back to 7.0, which is optimal.

Which foods are the worst for your teeth?

In dentistry we look at the impact of food in three ways:

  • The Kind Of Food

Foods like Cookies, cakes, breads, chips, crackers, soft drinks, dried fruit, and candies provide carbohydrates (sugar) to the bacteria in your mouth causing an acidic environment and increasing the chance of cavities and decay. These foods are sticky and don't rinse easily from your mouth. Avoid letting these foods sit on your teeth after eating them.

  • How Often It Is Eaten

The frequency of consumption also determines its effects on the teeth. For example, if you drink soft drinks, it's best to have it all in one sitting instead of sipping it all throughout the day. Doing so causes the perfect environment in your mouth for bacteria to flourish and your saliva never gets the chance to neutralize its pH.

  • When It Is Eaten

This is where detergent foods can come into play. When you're about to finish your meal, have an apple, celery stick, or carrot. It will act like a "natural toothbrush." Also, try to make these detergent foods the basis for snacks you have throughout the day.
It’s common knowledge that certain foods, like those rich in sugar, are particularly bad for dental health. However, on the opposite end of the scale are a set of foods which do minimal damage to tooth enamel. In fact, they can actually have a cleansing effect on teeth by stimulating saliva production. This effect can undercut the negative impact of acids and starches that have adhered to teeth by helping to ‘wash’ them away.

When Are Detergent Foods Best Eaten?

The most effective time to eat detergent foods is after eating foods that are bad for teeth, but before employing traditional techniques such as brushing and flossing. Eating detergent foods after eating particularly harmful foods (such as hard, sugary candy) is an especially effective approach.

Detergent foods should be the last piece of food you consume during a meal for best results. Think of them as the closest you can get to brushing your teeth.

Always remember, these foods are not a replacement for brushing and flossing. You still need good dental hygiene regardless of what you're eating!

One of the most popular scenarios when detergent foods are employed is when, in a travel or camping situation, dental care tools like toothbrushes have been forgotten. Regular use of detergent foods can help limit the damage done to tooth enamel in these scenarios.

For those conscious of dental health, detergent foods represent another option in their toolkit
Detergent foods are the perfect preventive food.
